Indeed, it was doubted if the problem ever would be solved. And, perhaps, someone who did not expect to do it himself.

Whatever the Hermians argue, survival is not everything. We are not alone. The stars will never again be the same to us. It was bad enough when they were motionless; but when they started to move, and sympathetic vibrations set in, it was more than any warm-blooded male should be asked to take.

Some women, Commander Norton had decided long ago, should not be allowed aboard ship; weightlessness did things to their breasts that were too damn distracting. He was quite sure that at least one serious space accident had been caused by acute crew distraction, after the transit of a well-upholstered lady officer through the control cabin. Carlisle Perera had as yet told no one how he had wakened from a restless sleep with the message from his subconscious still echoing in his brain: The Ramans do everything in threes.

If they are deprived of it, the mind manufactures its own substitutes. Such monumental indifference was worse than any deliberate insult.

To them, the only purpose of the Universe was the production of intelligence, and they were apt to talk sneeringly about purely astronomical phenomena, 'Mere dead matter' was one of their favourite phrases.

Some elder statesmen, accustomed to the instantaneous communications that Earth had long taken for granted, had never reconciled themselves to the fact that radio waves took minutes, or even hours, to journey across the gulfs between the planets. Only the Moon had the barely acceptable one-and-a-half-second delay—with all the political and psychological consequences that implied.

Even by the twenty-second century, no way had yet been discovered of keeping elderly and conservative scientists from occupying crucial administrative positions. Welcome back. A group of human explorers are selected and dispatched to intercept the ship in an attempt to discover its purpose, ascertain if there is any threat to Earth, and answer the mysterious questions regarding its origins and purpose. Because all extant names for Roman and Greek gods have been used on other newly discovered celestial objects at this point, the Hindu god Rama is invoked in naming the object, which is originally mistaken to be a comet.

Arthur C. Clarke's novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards upon its release, and coming hard on the heels of " A Space Odessey", "Rendezvous With Rama" is widely regarded as one of Clarke's best works, and is often cited as a quintessential example of "hard" science fiction.

On June 30,Moscow escaped destruction by three hours and four thousand kilometers--a margin invisibly small by the Standards of the universe. On February 12,another Russian city had a still narrower escape, when the second great meteorite of the twentieth century detonated less than four hundred kilometers from Vladivostok, with an explosion rivaling that of the newly invented uranium bomb.

In those days there was nothing that men could do to protect themselves against the last random shots in the cosmic bombardment that had once scarred the face of the Moon. The meteorites of and had struck uninhabited wilderness; but by the end of the twenty-first century there was no region left on Earth that could be safely used for celestial target practice.

The human race had spread from pole to pole. And so, inevitably. Robert Reed, whose fantastic stories have been filling all the major SF magazines for the past several years, spins a captivating tale of adventure and wonder on an incredible scale in this novel based on his acclaimed novella. In the year a mysterious spaceship, Rama, arrived in the solar system. It was huge - big enough to contain a city and a sea - and empty, apparently abandoned.

Title: Rendezvous with Rama Video Rama is a vast alien spacecraft that enters the Solar System, A perfect cylinder some fifty kilometres long, spinning rapidly, racing through space, Rama is a technological marvel, a mysterious and deeply enigmatic alien artifact. It is Mankind's first visitor from the stars and must be investigated.

Written by Paxgraham. I have not read the Arthur C Clarke novel that this film says to have been aspired by but, to be honest, I don't think it makes a bit of difference. There isn't really any plot here to be engaged by other than an unexplained space journey on the way to something unknown for the casual viewer and the cosmonauts making the journey. The lack of plot is a real shame because this film is very well made and looks great.

Considering it is a student film, it is impressive and it has a real sense of atmosphere. OK some of the images are heavily borrowed from other sources but they do still work well. So it is a shame that it doesn't run a little bit longer and have more ambition in delivering more to the casual viewer. I don't know the background to the film but watching it I can only assume that it is suppose to serve as a sort of "fan film" trailer for the Clarke novel because the lack of substance or narrative seems so obvious that it can only have been deliberate.

Atmospheric and visually impressive then, but just a shame that with such a strong foundation there was nothing more than this. Sign In. Get a sneak peek of the new version of this page. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends.

By the time it's realized that the visitor is actually a hollow artificial cylinder, only one human spaceship can even briefly reach the object and explore it before it slingshots around the Sun and returns to the depths of space.

Captain William Norton and the crew of the Endeavour discover that the structure, dubbed Rama after one of the major Hindu gods the Roman and Greek naming reserves having long been exhaustedis actually an entire miniature world stuffed with ever-more-amazing technology, which Clarke spends the bulk of the narrative detailing.

The novel garnered much acclaim and won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Although Rendezvous ends with a large Sequel HookClarke never seriously intended to write a follow-up, and many people agree that he shouldn't have. In fact, the three belated sequels were not written by Clarke, but by a friend of his, Gentry Lee, with Clarke merely providing ideas and support. The science is largely overshadowed by commercial conspiracies, government corruptionscientists having sex, and Lee's views on religion.

It also changes the nature of the setting to some degree, ratcheting it significantly farther to the cynical side and turning up the Used Future level. Your Mileage May Varynaturally.
